If you’re looking to take vacation with your family in Jaipur, then here are the top 10 family-friendly places to visit in the city.
While Jaipur is rich in monuments, not all of them are appropriate for a family outing: some have long lines to be in, steep unshaded steps, or subject matter that is better suited to an older crowd or to history nuts than to a 6-year-old. Here is a list of ideas designed specifically to fit the needs of families, based on accessibility, shade/rest availability, and how the site is really kid friendly.
- Amber Fort
Best stop in Jaipur for family get-togethers that can leave them with a “wow factor”. For most children the elephant ride to the fort is the best part of the day, and the mirror-work room at Sheesh Mahal is actually a lot of fun! Head out early in the morning to avoid crowds and hot temperatures.
- Nahargarh Fort
Less crowded than Amber, wide open courtyards where children are not confined to narrow corridors in the palace. Parents get a sunset view of the city of Jaipur as a bonus.
- Chokhi Dhani
This is the best evening activity to enjoy in Jaipur with family and is a Rajasthani village themed resort. It’s a folk dance, puppet shows, camel and bullock cart rides, a small amusement zone, a traditional thali dinner all in one. It’s folk dance, puppet shows, camel, bullock cart rides, small amusement section and a traditional thali dinner all in one. Jal Mahal (Water Palace) It is a very quick shutter and easy lookout from the lake shore, that doesn’t need queuing or long walking — a very high reward/low effort photo stop.
- Jantar Mantar
This UNESCO World Heritage astronomical observatory will definitely impress families — the giant sundials and instruments are a real eye catcher, especially for older children aged 8+, who are amazed by how it works! Keep the visit short for younger children as they can become distracted after 20-30 minutes.
- City Palace
A combination of museum exhibition and architecture. Its flatter, easier walks (as opposed to the stairs at Amber Fort), make it easier for families with strollers or older members.
- Hawa Mahal
It is best treated as a 15 minute photo stop from across the road and the interior is rather compact and will not keep the children occupied for very long. But for the classic Jaipur photo, it’s great.
- Jaipur Wax Museum (Nahargarh Fort premises)
A child-friendly attraction: Wax figures of Bollywood celebrities, historical figures and sports stars are all life size. Great added value if visiting Nahargarh Fort.
- Central Park
For a family looking to break off from the crowds of monuments, Central Park provides open green space, a jogging track, and a musical fountain at night – a great break for younger children who are looking for an opportunity to get some exercise.
- Albert Hall Museum
The museum in Ram Niwas Garden is a blend of Egyptian mummies, sculptures and artefacts which are more likely to captivate children’s interest than a classical palace tour followed by a walk in the garden.
Planning Tip
Rather than visiting all 10 in one weekend, try the two-day itineraries, for example Amber Fort is followed by the Nahargarh Fort and the Jal Mahal are all grouped together, and the City Palace is followed by the Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar are all grouped together in the old city.
