Itinerary for 7 Days Rajasthan Family Tour – Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur

This 7-day Rajasthan family tour itinerary is from the city of Jaipur to the city of Udaipur and finally to Jodhpur.

The majority of the Rajasthan tours on the Internet are geared towards single travelers or couples that don’t take breaks for lunch, breakfast, or dinner, and can drive through five forts in a day. This isn’t a family friendly approach. Children require toilet breaks, the elderly rest stops and all of us need a proper lunch, not a granola bar in the car. This schedule is designed realistically (3 cities in 7 days, not 6).

Day 1: On arrival in Jaipur, stay at the hotel.Day 1: Reach Jaipur and take night stay at the hotel.

Arrive in Jaipur, stay at the hotel and make the day yours. In the evening, go to Bapu Bazaar for an easy way to do some stress-free shopping, whether it’s a snack or juttis (traditional footwear) or block-printed fabrics, without the stress of “must see this monument.

Day 2 is a jaipur sightseeing tour to Amber Fort & City Palace. Get up early (before 8 AM) to avoid the crowds and the heat at Amber Fort. The elephant/jeep ride to the fort entrance and the mirror work Sheesh Mahal within the fort are the most popular attractions. Limit the visit to 2-2.5 hours – forts are big and young children get tired on stone steps.

When back from lunch, take your time at the City Palace and Jantar Mantar (The big astronomical instruments are indeed fascinating for children of 8 years old and above). One of the best family evenings in Jaipur is at Chokhi Dhani, the folk dance, puppet show, camel walking and thali-feasting village, which always offers a wonderful ending to the day.

Day 3: Jaipur — Hawa Mahal & Local Experiences

Although it is not a visit, take the photograph of Hawa Mahal in the morning light from the other side of the street. After that, relax for the rest of the day – take a tour of Nahargarh Fort and have plenty of room for the kids to run around and have an early dinner.

Day 4: Visit Udaipur

The road journey from Jaipur to Udaipur takes about 6-6.5 hours (save the time by flying short distances if you want). When travelling by car, stop at Ajmer/Pushkar for a few hours, the lake and market here is relaxing, and a good place to take a break. From Udaipur, visit the City Palace and Lake Pichola.

Day 5: Udaipur – City Palace & Lake Pichola.

Go to the City Palace Udaipur in the morning, it’s not as taxing as the forts of Jaipur (mostly flat corridors, not steep steps). Take a boat drive around Lake Pichola in the afternoon, which is always the best part of the day for families, particularly for sunset views of the backdrop of the Aravalli hills.

Day 6: Udaipur Leisure Day & Drive to Jodhpur. Either pass the relaxed morning at Saheliyon Ki Bari gardens (fountains, small aquarium, easy walking paths — truly designed for a relaxed family visit) and continue to Jodhpur (about a 4.5-hour drive); or skip Jodhpur and stay longer at Udaipur if travelling with very young children.

The final day of this tour is one of the most enjoyable. The last day of this tour is one of the most enjoyable days.

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the best preserved forts in India and has an audio-guide tour which is really interesting for youngsters. Up in the morning and then eat lunch in the old town of Blue City and then travel to airport/station. Some practical advice for families

Rapid pace is more important than coverage. It would be very tempting to include Jaisalmer in this tour, but this will be a 2 whole driving days. If you have to do desert safari then make it 10 days, not 5.

For family outings, hire private cabins that use air conditioning, and not shared transport — extra flexibility to break for a child’s break is worth the extra expense. Have an itinerary in Hindi/local script as an extra in case you need to tell it to a local taxi driver or ask for directions.
