Udaipur with Kids: Best Attractions & Family Travel Tips

In all our family tour experiences in Rajasthan, Udaipur is the easiest Rajasthan city to visit with kids as it is compact with less steep fort visits, it also has lakes which provide a natural relaxed pace for the family as opposed to visiting monuments throughout the day.

So this is what works in travelling with children.

Lake Pichola Boat Ride

This is the only thing that is child friendly in Udaipur. It takes about 30-45 minutes to ride the boat, and the entire ride is very calm with no walking involved, which is great because kids enjoy the opportunity to see the City Palace, the Lake Palace and the surrounding Aravalli hills. Riding around sunset is a memorable time, in particular (if your children are old enough to enjoy the extra time on water, book the slightly longer ride that circles closer to Jag Mandir island).

City Palace Udaipur

Unlike Amber Fort in Jaipur, City Palace Udaipur is made up primarily of flat, interconnected corridors, making it much easier to maneuver with strollers, young children or elderly relatives. The peacock courtyard (Mor Chowk), with its colorful mosaic work, attracts the attention of children more than the historical displays.

Saheliyon Ki Bari (Garden of the Maidens)

A truly family-friendly gem. It’s very easy to walk around in this garden and it has some fountains, a small aquarium, lotus pools, etc. — it’s basically set up for a leisurely stroll and not a hectic sight-see the whole day kind of day.

Fateh Sagar Lake & Boat Ride

A more peaceful and less touristy option to Lake Pichola. Also on an island in the middle of the lake is a small Nehru Garden with a boat ride included — a good and inexpensive place to spend some time in the lake but free from the presence of City Palace visitors. Bagore Ki Haveli is a cultural event where people get together in the evenings to enjoy the culture.

If your kids love music and dancing, the evening folk dance and puppet show at Bagore Ki Haveli, just on the shores of Lake Pichola is a perfect culture for the long last hour that doesn’t need much attention span.

Vintage & Classic Car Museum

A great, lesser known destination for vehicle-loving little ones – a private collection of vintage cars previously owned by the Mewar royal family, formerly the royal garage. Short visits, high engagement for children interested in cars.

In this session, families will learn some tips and tricks from the practicals. Avoid traveling far from Lal Ghat or Hanuman Ghat area of the lake Pichola — this not only saves time but also keeps kids near the attractions as most of them are easily accessible by walking or using an auto rickshaw.

Bring sun protection even in winter — sun is reflected on the lake during boat rides, making it feel hot in Udaipur.

October to March are the best months for comfortable daytime temperatures and Udaipur is also relatively cool in the summer, during the monsoon (July to September) months. The lakes are also at their best when they are full, which occurs during the monsoon season.

Meal timing: Many great restaurants around the lake are at their busiest during the hours of sun and a lake-view table (6:30–8 pm) — reserve early or have younger children and get to the restaurant a little earlier than the kids.
